subpane

or just “pane”; a window may be divided into multiple subpanes, each of which is typically devoted to different pieces of information. Subpanes are typically fixed in position with respect to the window as a whole. From a user’s view, the subpane may not be specifically identified as such, and may only be obvious in cases such as split windows, where the user can actually create and resize panes. From the programmer’s view, the subpane provides an independent drawing area that clips to its boundary, allowing the programmer to treat it independently from other subpanes, much as if it was its own window.
