collaborative drawing

2 or more people conversing with the use of drawings or working together to create a drawn artifact. Conversing and creating an artifact are very different types of tasks, though there exists a continuum between them, such that it’s difficult to produce a successful collaborative drawing tool that doesn’t support both to some extent.

Successful support for this type of collaboration involves two primary facilities: helping people avoid collisions (where they accidentally interfere with each other’s work) and providing communication facilities (i.e. direct communication tools such as chat and indirect “awareness” tools such as telepointers).

The illustration shows the Conversation Board, a multi-user structured-drawing tool designed for rapid, informal conversation, much as a whiteboard would be used in an office or educational setting.
