Position general purpose

The Yale Center for Media and Instructional Innovation (CMI2) is seeking a highly skilled Manager of Usability and Client Relations to join our Instructional Solutions team. Reporting to the Associate Director of the Instructional Solutions Group, he/she will be responsible for defining user-centered requirements for mission-critical institutional education initiatives including CLasses*v2, a suite of online learning and collaboration tools powered by Sakai. The ideal candidate will have a strong track record of collecting and analyzing client input to improve usability and inform ongoing product and service development. The Manager of Usability and Client Relations will also take an active role in user support, documentation, and promotional outreach.

Essential duties

  • Work closely with the Manager of Instructional Support to identify, research, and analyze user support and feature requests; design and develop improved documentation and outreach materials
  • Assist in front-line client support, quality assurance and testing
  • Take a leadership role in regular review of Classes*v2 interface, functionality, and usage trends with a focus on increased usability
  • Develop, plan, and execute systematic research on user requirements through such mechanisms as surveys, interviews, focus groups, usability testing, competitive analysis
  • Synthesize research findings from internal and external sources into creative and meaningful recommendations; coordinate with the CMI2 and Classes*v2 development teams to implement improvements
  • Organize and participate in meetings with representatives of Yale professional schools and other partner organizations (University Library, Registrar, Graduate Teaching Fellow Program, etc.) to gather new requirements and to communicate current development priorities for CMI2 and Classes*v2
  • Keep abreast of technological and pedagogical developments, underway or under construction, throughout the University and at other institutions of higher learning, that should inform Classes*v2 strategic planning
  • Advocate for user-centered design and champion client-driven solutions for web-based teaching and learning applications across the University landscape

Education and experience

  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree with at least 2 years relevant professional experience. Preference given to candidates with degree or significant coursework in Interaction Design, Human Factors Engineering, Human Computer Interaction, or related programs
  • Significant experience in planning and implementing user requirement research and usability studies, and a proven track record of being able to translate findings into actionable software development or user interface improvement
  • Significant hands-on experience in at least one of the following: technical support, software documentation, quality assurance
  • Experience using learning management systems such as Sakai, Blackboard or the equivalent
  • Preferred: experience in statistical analysis

The ideal candidate will clearly demonstrate the following skills and abilities:

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, written and verbal, especially the ability to translate technical information to non-technical audiences
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize and synthesize clear goals and tasks from diverse input sources
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a close-knit development team
  • Capacity to research various subjects using traditional library techniques and the web.
