Purpose:

The Global User Experience workgroup is responsible for design and testing of all customer-facing web application UI work, innovating, and managing the design and maintenance of global online content to ensure a usable, consistent and brand appropriate user experience. The Sr. Usability Engineer operates at a high level to conduct user research using a variety of methodologies for all of the global Corbis network properties.

Contacts:

Ordinary course communication and close business relationships with direct team and Sr. Manager, Global User Experience. Excellent collaboration with all colleagues is critical for success in this role. The purpose and type of these communications includes data collection, negotiation, usability reports. Presentations to department heads/executives for critical usability findings.

Essential functions:

  • Primary work activities include applied usability work (running iterative usability lab studies, surveys, focus groups, log file analysis, benchmarking and design reviews), administers studies, communicates findings in written and verbal reports.
  • Generates action plans and follows up to ensure issues are addressed.
  • Typically operates as a lead on large projects that span multiple locations and languages that require challenging methodologies.
  • Consultation to other groups/teams--working directly with nearly every discipline at the company as needed.
  • Represents user needs during requirements definition, project planning and UI design.
  • Works closely with the user experience team to provide feedback on wireframes, visual comps, study plans, reports, presentations and to research and report on current industry literature.
  • Effectively drive cross-team partnerships.
  • Educates others in the company at all levels about customer workflows, needs, and user experience issues.
  • Champions changes and enhancements that have a direct, positive impact on the user experience.
  • Working directly with the product teams early in the development lifecycle to determine and scope the level of usability support that is needed for each feature request.

Requirements:

  • The ability to communicate usability data to others in person and in writing, and the ability to use data to argue for improvements to the customer experience is critical in this position.
  • Knowledgeable and fluent in a wide range of qualitative and quantitative methodologies, and able to quickly and effectively analyze and present empirical/qualitative data to shape application design, direction, and implementation--methodologies may include lab testing, questionnaires, usage logs, surveys, user performance benchmarking, ethnographic research, rapid iterative testing, and numerous other techniques.
  • Adaptable, a fast learner, and open to working on a variety of projects.
  • At least 4 years of experience in the industry designing and conducting usability studies (both field work and iterative lab studies), analyzing data and working successfully with teams to drive application of results into design and development.
  • Proven project management and planning skills - with ability to focus on details - while also being focused on strategic goals.
  • Experience generating research plans, defining and tracking user experience goals in novel product spaces, coordinating work on multiple products and managing the work of external consultants.
  • Thorough knowledge of the field of human-computer interaction, experimental design, observational and field methods and data analysis.
  • Additional research skills such as survey design, focus group techniques, and participatory design are desired.
  • Excellent communications skills, and a history of helping teams achieve their quality and schedule goals.
  • Interest in participating in a user experience community with a focus on innovation.
  • A solid understanding of customer needs across multiple segments (enterprise, consumer, etc.).
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills required.
  • May include: -HCI/UCD (User-centered Design), Advanced Web user experience design, navigation and screen design.
