Description

The Web Usability Designer will lead user interface design processes, resulting in the adoption of system-wide standards, for PeaceHealth Intranet, Internet, and Extranet systems. The organization and visual interface of these web-based systems will be optimized to enhance the effectiveness of finding information and thus making employees and visitors more productive when visiting PeaceHealth web sites (internal or external). This includes the production of both structured (e.g. database-driven, applications) and unstructured (e.g. HTML web page) information. As such, the incumbent will work with both Application Developers and Content Coordinators on the Web Services Team to formulate standards to be used broadly across all PeaceHealth web environments.

The scope of work for this position is to apply robust usability methodologies to successfully design and implement complex interactive information delivery tools in alignment with organizational strategies. This position will serve as an expert on user centered design methodologies in order to empower and provide an efficient and consistent experience across many applications and web sites. The goal is to understand and represent customer needs specific to visual design and user interface early in the project life cycle. This person will work to improve the usability, usefulness, and desirability of web sites and applications in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Convene and work with various groups and disciplines to understand and continuously improve our understanding of their customer experience with information delivery (both internal and external customers, including patients).
  • Lead information-gathering sessions with customers across PeaceHealth regions and incorporate the results into designs through interviews, surveys, etc. to determine requirements.
  • Document and publish standards to be used across PeaceHealth Intranet, Internet, and Extranet environments related to usability and design.
  • Advocate, teach, and promote best practices related to usability concepts across HID and PeaceHealth.
  • Serve as a liaison between developers and customers to ensure that user interface and design requirements are implemented appropriately.
  • Analyze and understand complex workflows and processes in order to translate user needs into requirements.
  • Design and specify system architectures for successful user experiences.
  • Perform user research and task analysis.
  • Produce a business requirements document that works as a design tool and is incorporated as part of a team standard for future work. This document will include: conceptual models, process flows, navigational maps, and strategies.
  • Usability testing: develop test plans, conduct the tests, and analyze and share results with stakeholders.
  • Construct rapid prototypes, mockups, and interaction requirements specifications, utilizing design tools such as wireframes where appropriate.
  • Coordinate prototype reviews.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to continuously improve tools.
  • Provide best practices for visual design and user interfaces from both specific application and its integration with the overall customer experience.
  • Apply fundamental strategies of information visualization and design to complex displays of data and information.
  • This role ensures that a product:
    • meets the needs, goals, and expectations of the client, end-users, and other stakeholders;
    • is well-organized and thoughtfully designed with a consistent and cohesive application structure and visual design;
    • and follows principles of user interaction design and usability.
  • Effectively communicate with team members using the appropriate method of communication.
  • Perform special projects as requested and adapt to sudden project needs and requests.
  • Report status and progress to management.

Technical skills

  • Expertise in user centered design methods, specializing in web applications.
  • Best practice user interface and technical design.
  • Creating low- and high-fidelity prototypes of proposed designs.
  • Designing information architecture and navigation for large-scale web sites.
  • User needs assessment, requirements gathering, task analysis, cognitive walkthrough, and heuristic evaluation.
  • Usability testing both in the field and lab, with an emphasis on the overall user experience.
  • Familiarity with information visualization and display techniques.
  • HTML, Web Editors, Content Management Systems, Portals, CSS, XML, relational database concepts, Visio, Office, and PhotoShop.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with course work in Information Science, Informatics, or Computer Science required. Master's degree in Information Science, Human-Computer Interaction, or Cognitive Science preferred.
  • Minimum three years of experience in information or interaction design, requirements and user scenario development, site navigation and application design, user interface design, and other aspects of user-centered development.
  • Experience producing prototypes leading to the development of rich interactive user experiences.
  • Experience interpreting and translating business specifications/requirements and user requirements into usable interfaces.
  • Experience in gaining active end-user involvement in the specification, design, and implementation phases.
  • Familiarity with current usability research, theories and methodologies (especially user-centered design processes).
  • Knowledge of the principles and practice of Information Quality and Information Management.
