Usability Glossary: metagame

the context of a game and its use and all the ways it gets played that are outside the model of interaction the gameplay is designed for.

This includes ways the game gets played, for instance, by people saving and retrying levels, by memorizing the games behavior when it was meant to appear random, or by playing it for different goals than the game suggests it is for.

This also includes the social context and how gamers relate to each other, bragging of successes, forming teams and challenges, discussing strategies, and making connection between the game world and the rest of their lives.
